Overview
**Important Notice Orient Xplorer will not be running tours to Hmong Village during April to July 2012. Tours will re commence again in August 2012. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.**
Nestled high up in the mountains at a height of 1200m and surrounded by both lush forests and terraced agriculture, this Hmong Village provides plenty of interesting experiences for the discerning traveller. Whilst staying in the village you will get the opportunity to engage and take part in village life, including sesame seed dessert making, enjoy a cultural dance performed by the villagers as well as a guided tour through the villagers' spirit forest, which is bursting with wildlife and magnificently mature trees.
The name of the village is Ban Mae Sa Mai and it is home to the largest Hmong community in Chiang Mai, who originally migrated to Thailand, from Southern China. This trip will allow you to learn more about the colourful lifestyles of the Hmong and how they continue to preserve their traditional customs as well as engage in the modern Thai economy. The tours on offer are perfect for families and group tours as well as travelers who are keen to see a different side of Thailand and support a community led tourism project.
Eco-Tourism
During the trip you will also get the chance to take part in a unique reforestation programme that is helping to restore the surrounding landscape back to its natural habitat, after years of deforestation, due to slash and burn agriculture. You will get the opportunity to plant your own tree at the local nursery and visit the watershed reforestation plots, as well as the option to camp at the summit of Pa Klong Mountain, affording you stunning views of the surrounding region and, if you wake up early enough, a mesmerizing mountain top sunrise.
A percentage of the price of this trip goes directly to the support and upkeep of the village nursery. To learn more about the reforestation project and how it is benefiting the local community, please click here.
In terms of accommodation in the village, a large Guesthouse with spacious rooms is provided and overlooks the surrounding valleys. During the cooler months, fires can be lit on request.

I did the one day Hmong tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. I learnt so much and actually got to see the proper Hmong village life. They don't try and sell you goods, but rather teach you about their beliefs, lifestyle and culture which I found extremely refreshing compared to the other tours I've done in Thailand.
This really seemed like a unique experience and since it is so new the locals aren't yet tired of having people come through. Instead, they still seem excited and other people from the village joined in even when they weren't meant to which was great!
I found it educational, fun, different, new and the best village cultural experience in Thailand.
Highly recommended if you're curious and interested in really learning about the Hmong village life. I even got to try on the traditional Hmong dress which can take up to 2 months to make! Unbelieveable experience!
