Meet the Founders: Alex Putnam and Oppy Mitwong
Alex and Oppy both share a passion for travel and between them they have over 15 years of work and travel experience in Thailand and S.E Asia.
In terms of the Orient Xplorer concept, Alex says that:
"The aim of Orient Xplorer is to provide a travel service that captures the cultural essence of Chiang Mai, whilst also providing a unique travel experience that allows you to get off the beaten track and explore the many hidden treasures of the Chiang Mai region - a place that should be on everyone's travel itinerary."
Alex is originally from the UK where he graduated with a degree in Geography. He is a keen athlete and already has three marathons under his belt. He has traveleld throughout S.E Asia, Australia and Europe.
Alex first developed an affinity with Thailand in 2004 when he took part in a University exchange programme that led to him volunteering his skills in the tsunami reconstruction phase and overseeing the implementation of a waste management program in the devastated tsunami zone. Since then he has managed to combine his passion for travel with that of the environment by pursuing a career as an environmental consultant - a career choice that has taken him all over Thailand.
In 2008 Alex finally settled in Chiang Mai – a city that he calls his second home. Initially he began work on various environmental projects in the local region. However, as well as holding down the day job, Alex continued to explore the local area of Chiang Mai and in the process built up a vast network of tour operators and travel guides, which has subsequently led to the setting up of the Orient Xplorer.
In terms of the Orient Xplorer experience, Oppy says that:
"Based on our extensive knowledge of the local area we wish to provide you with both an enjoyable and insightful travel experience, one that you will remember and recommend to others as being unique and trust worthy."
Oppy is originally from Bangkok where she graduated from University with a BA in General Management. She is fluent in both English and Thai and has over 10 years experience of working in the travel industry including management roles at both luxury-eco resorts in the South of Thailand and 5 star hotels in Bangkok. She has also traveled and worked extensively throughout Europe and the USA. She always enjoys seeking out new and interesting experiences.
Through her varied experiences of working in both Thailand and abroad, she has gained a keen sense of the different expectations between Thai and foreigners. It is this unique understanding of such cultural differences as well as her effective communication skills that puts her in a perfect position to offer a high quality travel service to both Thai and international clients.
